Pumpkin and Sunflower Seeds are the shining stars in the newly flavored granola from Dad’s.

Dad’s granola is a nutritious breakfast, a delicious snack and a versatile nut based topping for desserts and other foods.

Dad’s is available in a few other delicious flavors: Almond or Pecan and with or without agave nectar. Loaded with organic, toasted rolled oats, pecans or almonds, cashews, lightly sweetened with maple syrup and agave nectar and finished with a hint of coconut oil – it’s a bowl of pure deliciousness.

Most varieties come in a super crunchy texture, are low glycemic index, and not too sweet. Certified gluten-free oats are also available.

Engel Farms Returns

Engel farms is a third generation farmstead that has come full circle. Owned and operated by John Engel (and partner Cypress Sigman) the farm started out conventional, but after being exposed to the organic movement and information from growers at the Austin Farmers Markets, he began his transition to organic. It has been a steady and successful process so far. Producing a wide array of fruits and vegetables in Frederickburg, Texas –– Engel Farms has certainly made a name for itself.


This week Engel Farms will be offering things such as:

Green Beans
Sweet potatoes
Tomatoes: cherry, cocktail, rembrandt, poppinsweet, red slicers, heirloom, orange slicer, black, green
Yellow Squash
Zucchini: golden, green

Vendor Highlights: Kuxtal Coffee

Guatemalan grown, Texas roasted.
The Kuxtal coffee beans are all processed at the farm in Guatemala using natural spring water as a wet wash, then sun dried. After proper drying has been completed its then shipped directly to Kuxtal Coffee and Tea for roasting. The Kuxtal facility is located in the picturesque Hill Country and lakeside community of Lago Vista Texas. The beans are then roasted on a 1913 Royal #5 Coffee Roaster or as some might refer to as a piece of history, art and functionality all rolled into one.
Co-founders, Scott and Regina Bogart, have been roasting coffee as a hobby for the past 20 plus years. While living in Guatemala, prior to their relocating to Texas in 2001, the couple always looked forward to receiving fresh green beans from the local farms so they could roast their own fresh batches. Available in whole bean, ground or just a cup at the market.

Vendor Highlights: The Maple Syrup Lady ~ Pure Maple Syrup

Owner, Anna Aldridge was born and raised on the farm in Blanchard, Michigan and recently found herself living in Austin, Texas where her husband works.  Realizing that pure maple syrup was in high demand and difficult to find, Blackberry Blossom Foods was born!  Products are now available in many central Texas farmers markets, health food stores, and from our online store.

Blackberry Blossom Foods produces and sells pure Michigan maple syrup from our family farm in Blanchard, Michigan.  We tap over 6,000 maple trees on our property every spring, hand gather the sap, and cook it down in our wood fired evaporator.  The finished syrup has no additives.

After we reduce the maple sap to make maple syrup, we transport it down to Austin, Texas where it is bottled up for sale.  We also use our all-natural maple syrup to make maple candy and maple butter.

This Week at the Market

This week at the market: As the weather remains uncertain so does some of our produce but signs of spring are beginning to trickle in. Spinach, Kale, Collards, and Swiss Chard are the it greens right now, while oranges and grapefruit keep up a sunny disposition at the market.

Leeks, broccoli, beets, sweet potatoes, and onions are still on deck while we might start to see a few artichokes and soon (fingers crosses) there after we may even have …. strawberries!

Of course we encourage you to stay for breakfast from 512 Market Kitchen, Maudies, or Gardeners Feast.

Fresh baked goods, local honey, pastries, farm fresh eggs, dairy good and SO much more are available.

Enjoy FREE live music and kids face painting and bring those well-behaved dogs!

Vendor Highlights: Concha’s Salsa & Seafood

Did you know you can but fresh fish at the Lone Star Farmers Market? Yvonne Cavazos of Concha’s not only makes some of the best salsa’s around she also sells fresh-off-the-boat fish such as Red Snapper, Flounder, Grouper and Gulf Shrimp to name a few. Be sure to stop by and say hello next time you are at the market, try some of her salsa and pick-up some fish for dinner. 

1. How long have you been making your signature salsas and how did you get started in the salsa & fish business? 
When I was young my great Grandma used to make this salsa in a Mexican style mortar and pestle, it was so good that we would just devour all of it in one sitting. About 4 years ago I decided I was going to bottle it and keep it as natural as possible like my great Grandma did. I always disliked store bought salsa because it doesn’t taste the same at all. Concha’s salsa is the way salsa should taste. 

You know the best thing to eat is really fresh tasting fish and I find that at Katie’s seafood  in Galveston. I bring to the market whole and fillets of red snapper, flounder, grouper, Boston sea scallops and shrimp. Katie’s seafood is known for the freshest and most honest fillet cuts. I bring in seafood for the markets arriving late Friday to Saturday. Mornings for freshest wild caught for out market shoppers.
2. What were you doing before launching your company?
Before I started this salsa business, I was in pharmaceutical sales on the psychiatric side for many years and decided to leave that business.

Vendor Highlight: Johnson’s Backyard Garden

Because the farmers at Lone Star Farmers Market are experienced growers, they know how to handle the challenges of weather and still bring a bounty of delicious food to our customers. Brenna Peterson, who works the Johnson’s Backyard Garden stand at the market, says the variety at this time of year is almost overwhelming. She especially loves “all the color of the winter produce.”

What does that mean exactly? Brenna is not just referring to pretty food. The color of fruits and vegetables comes from phytochemicals. Plants rich in color are high in these chemicals that are believed to reduce the risk of chronic health problems. The winter harvest is full of these vegetables, such as leafy greens, cool season flowering plants, and a variety of root veggies.  It’s also peak season for citrus. Best of all is that the fruits and vegetables at Lone Star Farmers Market come from just miles away and most times are only hours out of the ground or off the tree or vine.
