Top 5 Reasons to Shop at the Farmers Market

Top 5 Reasons to Shop at the Farmers Market –– As the new year begins many of us make resolutions to be healthy and make better decisions. Both of these things can be accomplished simply by supporting your local farmers market. There are certainly many reasons as to why one should consider shopping at the farmers market but here is a list of our top 5!

1. Meet the Farmers. Get to know who grow your food and ask questions such as when it was picked? how it was grown? and how do I prepare it?

2. Fresh Off-the-Farm Produce. Farmers Market produce is picked ripe and often sold the same day. There are no chemicals added for it to remain “fresh” for a long transport.

3. Farmers’ Markets puts more money directly into the farmers’ pockets.  Commercial farmers get only twenty-five cents of every dollar’s worth of produce sold in supermarkets.  At the farmers market, they get the whole dollar, they pay a small amount of rent- often only 5 percent.

4. Eat Seasonal and Native. Shopping local means keeping the farmlands and diets seasonal and encourages regional farming.
5. Builds a Better Community. When produce is grown and purchased locally, the money remains in the community and stimulates the local economy.

Thank you for your support ~ Happy New Year and see you at the market!
